The famous Dutch painter Rembrandt (1606-1669) created nearly one hundred self-portraits during his lifetime including approximately fifty paintings, thirty-two etchings and seven drawings. The one shown in the postcard is a small oil painting (15 x 12.2 cm), realised in 1630. Characterized by very fine brush strokes, it shows a focused, serious artist, with a slightly quizzical look. There are known only five paintings by Rembrandt, which were applied to copper, three of them with primed gold leaf as this self-portrait.
